FEBRUARY 3, 2024 – Launching and unveiling of Computer Literacy Lab: The Max and Ada Bailor Educational Foundation, Inc., with support from the Amazon AWS Innovation Fund, launched a computer literacy lab, a 3000-watt solar unit to power the lab, and unveiled fifteen Dell laptop computers to their Junior Secondary school in Kagberay Bomkapr village in the Karene district of Northern Sierra Leone. The lab is a shared use facility with the Foursquare Primary School of Kagberay.
Dignitaries from various works of life were invited to grace the occasion. These included the District Director of the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), a representative from the Teaching Service Commission, and Chiefdom authorities. Also present were parents/guardians of the students, a representative from the Teachers’ Union, and teachers from surrounding schools. Media personnel from AYV Media were at the scene to provide coverage of the entire program.
The following issues were highlighted by various speakers during the meeting:
The importance of computer literacy.
The importance of parents sending their children to school.
The District Director encouraged parents who had not yet enrolled their children in school for whatever reason to do so immediately and admonished students to make good use of the facilities available to them.
The Chiefdom authorities in their deliberations also emphasized the importance of education and celebrated the Max and Ada Bailor Educational Foundation’s efforts.
The meeting ended with a statement of gratitude by a student representative, thanking the Bailor family with particular reference to the Amazon AWS Innovation Fund provider.
The goal of the computer literacy lab is to introduce and accelerate STEM Education in the Kagbayray Bomkapr Village Community. We believe that our focus on technology education will help lay the foundation for bridging the digital divide and position the community for entry into the twenty-first century.
Prior to receiving funding from the Amazon AWS Innovation Fund to install a 3000-watt solar unit to power the lab, the community lacked electricity and internet access.
